A retaining wall can look simple once the blocks, sleepers or stone are in place. What sits below it is what determines whether it stays straight through Melbourne’s wet winters, dry summers and shifting ground. The right retaining wall excavation steps create room for a properly compacted base, drainage behind the wall and a footing that suits the wall’s height, material and load.

Excavation is not just about digging a trench to a rough depth. It is about setting out accurately, checking what is in the ground, managing soil and water, and leaving a clean formation that the next trade can build on with confidence. Get this stage wrong and even quality wall materials can end up moving, leaning or holding water where they should not.

Start With the Wall Design, Not the Machine

Before excavation begins, establish exactly what is being built. A low garden edge has very different requirements from a retaining wall supporting a driveway, a pool area, a building boundary or a sloping backyard. The wall type also matters. Concrete sleepers, treated timber, masonry blocks and poured concrete all need different footing details and installation methods.

Confirm the wall line, finished height and levels at both ends. This prevents a common problem on sloping sites: excavating to a level line when the design calls for stepped footings, or vice versa. The finished ground level in front of and behind the wall also needs to be clear, because it affects the exposed wall height and drainage arrangement.

For walls that need engineering, follow the approved plans. In Victoria, requirements can change depending on wall height, surcharge loads, boundary position and local council rules. A wall holding up a driveway, shed, neighbouring land or any structure is not the place for assumptions. Have the design, permits and responsibilities sorted before soil starts coming out.

Check Services and Site Access First

The first physical job is making sure the excavation area is safe to dig. Identify underground services before bringing machinery onto site. Water, gas, electricity, communications and drainage lines can run through backyards and along boundaries, even where there is no obvious marker above ground. Service plans are useful, but careful on-site checking is still essential.

Access deserves the same attention. On a tight Melbourne block, the route from the front gate to the backyard can dictate the equipment choice, spoil handling and the order of work. Measure gates, side passages, turns, overhead clearances and soft ground. Protect paving, garden beds and existing structures along the travel path where needed.

The excavation depth needs to account for compacted crushed rock or specified base material, bedding where required, the first course of wall material and the target finished level. Digging only to the bottom of the first block is a shortcut that usually creates a wall sitting too high.

Excavate to Firm, Undisturbed Ground

The main dig removes soil to the planned width and depth, but final trimming is just as important. Excavate in controlled passes and keep checking depth and line as work progresses. Over-digging creates extra work, extra material and a weaker base if it is simply backfilled with loose soil.

The aim is to reach firm, suitable ground without disturbing it unnecessarily. Site conditions vary widely across Melbourne. Some blocks have sandy material, reactive clay, fill from previous construction or mixed rubble close to the surface. If the excavation reveals soft pockets, loose fill, waterlogged material or unexpected buried debris, stop and assess the solution before building over it.

Sometimes the answer is to remove unsuitable material and rebuild the formation with engineered fill or compacted crushed rock. In other cases, an engineer may need to review the ground condition and amend the footing detail. Spending time on this now is far cheaper than repairing a wall that settles unevenly later.

Keep the excavation floor clean. Loose spoil, clumps of wet clay and rubble make it hard to compact a base evenly. Where rain is expected, plan the sequence so the trench is not left open and saturated for days. Water can soften some soils quickly, collapse unsupported edges and turn a precise excavation into a repair job.

Build Drainage Into the Dig

Water pressure is one of the main reasons retaining walls fail. The excavation needs enough room behind the wall for free-draining aggregate and a drainage pipe that directs water to a lawful outlet. This is not an optional finishing touch. It is part of the wall system.

The drainage pipe is typically placed at the base behind the wall, with the correct fall so water can move away rather than sit in the trench. The actual outlet and pipe detail depend on the site, wall design and drainage rules. Never direct water onto a neighbour’s property or assume it can simply disappear into the soil.

Use the specified drainage aggregate and, where required, geotextile fabric to stop fine soil migrating into the stone. The excavation should be wide enough to install these layers without crushing or displacing them while placing wall materials. If the wall backs onto clay, good drainage becomes even more critical because clay holds water and can increase pressure behind the wall.

Compact the Base in Layers

A flat-looking base is not automatically a stable base. Place the specified base material in manageable layers and compact each layer properly. Thick, loose layers may compact on the surface while remaining soft underneath, which can cause the wall to settle or rotate.

The right compaction method depends on the material, trench width and wall system. A plate compactor may suit accessible areas, while tighter sections require a different approach. Check the base level repeatedly with a laser or straightedge. Small level errors in the first course become obvious as the wall rises.

For concrete sleeper walls, post holes and footings must also be excavated to the engineered depth and diameter. For block walls, the base needs to remain level and fully supported along the wall run. Do not rely on a thin layer of loose sand or soil to correct major level differences. Correct the excavation and base before installation starts.

Manage Spoil, Safety and the Next Trade

Excavated soil needs a plan. Clean soil may be retained for landscaping or reshaping the yard, while clay, rubble and contaminated material may need removal and appropriate disposal. Stockpiles should be kept back from the trench edge. Piling heavy spoil beside an excavation adds pressure to the sides and reduces safe working space.

Keep people, pets and vehicles away from open trenches. Excavation edges can crumble without warning, particularly after rain or in loose fill. Deeper excavations, confined work areas and walls close to structures may need specific temporary support and safety controls. This is not a job for someone to climb into and “just tidy up” without considering the risk.

Before the wall installer arrives, the site should be clean, accessible and checked against the plan. The footing line should be at the correct depth, the base should be compacted, drainage provisions should be ready, and spoil should not block machine or material access. A tidy handover saves time and gives the wall crew a sound start.

When Professional Excavation Is Worth It

A short, low landscaping wall on an open, flat block may be manageable with careful preparation. Once access tightens, levels change, soil is uncertain or the wall carries a serious load, professional excavation becomes the practical choice.
